What should a clothing sample brief include?
This checklist is for womenswear brands and wholesale buyers developing dresses, shirts, blouses or matching sets. Use it to make missing decisions visible before sampling. It is a starting brief; we confirm the development scope and costs after reviewing your style.
| Send or specify | Useful detail |
|---|---|
| Style reference | Front and back references, sketch or technical pack. For showroom styles, include the YR style code. |
| Fabric and colour | Composition and weight if known, swatch reference, desired drape and opacity, lining needs and colour direction. |
| Fit and measurements | Base sample size, key garment measurements, intended fit and finished length. Flag which measurements still need development. |
| Construction | Fastenings, seam details, straps, sleeve shape, pockets, trims and any print-placement requirements. |
| Commercial brief | Estimated quantity per style, proposed colour and size split, target cost if known, and target delivery date. |
| Brand finishing | Label and packing requirements, artwork where available, and details to confirm before bulk. |
What if I only have a reference image?
Send it and explain the parts you want to develop. A front view may leave the back construction, closure, lining or fit unclear, so include additional views or notes when possible. Our in-house pattern room can review reference images, designs and technical information; we agree the development approach before starting the sample.
What must be checked on the sample?
- Fabric: compare the actual material with the agreed swatch and written specification, including lining and coverage.
- Fit: review neckline, armhole, waist, hip and intended ease against the base size and your measurement chart.
- Proportions: check finished length, sleeve volume, ruffle depth and the balance of front and back.
- Construction: inspect fastenings, seams, trims, pockets and any print alignment relevant to the design.
- Revisions: write down each change, its measurement or reference, and which sample version it applies to.
Does a sample confirm the full size range?
A base-size sample is one part of development. Agree the size range, grading, measurement chart and any further fit reviews required for the order. Do not assume that a photographed dress or a single approved sample defines every finished size.
How do MOQ and lead times affect the sample plan?
YR Apparel’s typical bulk MOQ is 100 pieces per style. Fabric minimums, colours and construction can change the requirements. Samples are usually around 3 days and bulk production around 20 days, subject to style, material availability, approvals and the order situation. These are planning references, not a guaranteed delivery date. Confirm sample costs, revisions and transport separately.
What should be approved before bulk production?
Keep the approved sample and written specifications together. Confirm material and colour, finished measurements, grading, construction, trims and labels, packing, quantity, price and the production schedule. If the style or material changes, review the effect on cost, fit and timing before proceeding.
